Around the early 1900′s in windward Oahu, neighbors in Maunawili discovered what they affectionately called the pua tree. The tree, indigenous to New Guinea and Northern Australia, and cultivated in the lava flows and cloud forests of Samoa, had mysteriously made its way through the South Pacific and into their neighbor’s yard. The residents didn’t know that a Mangaian legend said that their beloved pua tree (now called Pua keni keni) guarded the entrance to the Land of the Spirit’s, they only knew that when the white flowers on the tree bloomed it made their trade winds sweet.
